How finasteride works
Finasteride blocks the type 2 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, lowering DHT — the hormone that shrinks follicles in male-pattern baldness. Less DHT means follicles are protected and can recover.
Results
Finasteride stops hair loss in about 80–90% of men and produces visible regrowth in roughly 65%. It works best started early and is most powerful combined with minoxidil — around 94% of men improved on the combo at one year.
Oral vs topical
Oral (1 mg daily) is the standard, best-studied form. Topical finasteride delivers it to the scalp with lower blood-DHT levels, which may mean fewer systemic side effects while keeping much of the benefit.
Side effects
A minority of men report sexual side effects; most are reversible on stopping. Because it affects hormones, it's prescription-only and not for women who are or may become pregnant. Talk to a doctor about whether it's right for you — or consider dutasteride, a stronger DHT blocker.
